Time is Money

by Mika Ortega

December 1, 2006

Your time is precious, and if you feel like supermodel Linda Evangelista who at one time would not get out of bed for less than $10,000 a day, you’ll surely appreciate the concept of Boxbe. With Boxbe, you can charge people for emailing you. That’s right- for a fee of your choice, people not on your ‘free list’ will have to pay for your attention.

While the concept is ideal, even allowing the money you make from paying emailers to be easily donated to a charity, the question remains if this new service will be successful or not. In fact, it could even mean you’d receive less emails because of the cost. While their message may be valid, who really wants to sign up for the payment process, actually pay, and then still not know that you’ll respond? On the other hand, this service could also mean far less spam and advertising junk. With pros and cons, the success of Boxbe is one of those things we’ll just have to wait to see.

On the upside, the benefits of Boxbe still come about whether you charge senders or not. If you choose not to charge people to email you, you can still eliminate the majority of spammers from getting to your inbox through the CAPTCHA feature. Requiring the “‘enter the letters you see’ test,” as Yahoo Tech reporter Christopher Null calls it, the CAPTCHA feature forces humans, as opposed to automated computers, to prove that they’re personally sending a message.

Boxbe is still new and under wraps. As it becomes more widely known, it could potentially take off. Try it for yourself at Boxbe.com.
